Particularly in large cities where space is at a premium, new-builds frequently feature comfortable living areas beneath the roof while loft conversions and extensions are just as popular for existing properties. In both cases quality dormer windows make this possible. Available in a range of shapes, a dormer model can fit different constructions and project out from the main roof. Ideal for adding interior space, bringing in much natural light, and creating great views out, dormer windows from Neuffer transform lofts into bright and well-insulated rooms. With a wide range of quality finishes, shading options, and purpose-designed glazing, dormer products can be easily tailored to match various architectural styles and customer priorities.

The Different Types of Dormer Windows

Depending on how a loft conversion or new-build is constructed, dormer windows can come in different forms. There are flat roof dormer models, for example, where the extension slopes in the same direction as the main roof but at a shallower angle. A shed dormer, on the other hand, works in a similar way but is rather characterized with a slanting roof of its own. An eyelid model, on the other hand, has a long curve. These types of dormer windows are well-suited to standard square or rectangular-shaped windows. Others, such as eyelid dormer roof conversions then require particularly small architectural dimensions while a flat-roof dormer could work well with a strikingly generous glazed surface. Thanks to our custom manufacturing, at Neuffer a wide range of window sizes are possible – just contact our expert team to find out more about our windows today.

Some further types of attic extensions then also exist. These include a gable-fronted dormer or a bonneted window that add impressive character or may be required for architecture in certain listed areas. Due to their unique shape, these gables often need trapezoid or arched windows that can be harder to find. At Neuffer charming style has few limits though and a range of different arched, trapezoid, and triangular windows are available. Many of the shapes can also be coupled together or feature extra glazed elements like upper fanlights. This makes our dormer products particularly versatile, ideal for fitting with an elegant, traditional style to showcasing contemporary architecture.

Key Factors to Consider when Purchasing a Dormer Window

When it comes to renovations, gaining more living area without having to move is one of the main attractions of loft conversions. From adding a home office to creating an extra bedroom for a growing family, turning an empty space into a functional room can increase property value as well as quality of life. To ensure maximum comfort though and meet planning permissions, the window should perform excellently in the following categories:

  • Thermal insulation
  • Noise protection
  • Ventilation & weather resistance
  • Style

Saving on Energy and Creating Peaceful Interiors

Given the fact that a dormer window is often located at the front of homes and commonly aims to make once damp, cold interiors warm, it should be produced with purpose-designed parts. As a large proportion of a window's surface area consists of glass, efforts are often focused here. At Neuffer all windows come with good quality double glazing as a standard. Featuring two panes with the space between them filled with inert argon gas, this makes for effective thermal insulation. Microscopic low-e coating made from metal oxides then also helps to reflect solar radiation. To further enhance dormer energy efficiency though and create a comfortable year-round interior climate, triple glazing is also available. Featuring three panes, this glass is thicker and will prevent energy loss via conduction to a greater extent, helping to keep roof rooms cool during hot spells and warm when it's cold out, which in turn saves on utility bills.

Beyond glazing, the window's frame also plays a role in ensuring a steady interior temperature. Choosing one made from innovative vinyl, for example, will have the frame feature multiple built-in chambers that contain air and slow heat conduction. A warm edge spacer can then also be added to the material's core during manufacturing.

Alongside heat, because it is installed high up, a dormer is also exposed to sound waves. These may be from typical nearby noises but also those from far away since the elevated position means there is less in the way to block the travelling sound. At Neuffer, glazing can therefore also be customized for soundproofing. Panes of asymmetrical thickness are used to reduce sound by up to 38 dB, for example, which has the dormer meet noise reduction classes 2 and 3. At a maximum, this glass is recommended for a house situated around 300 m from a motorway with around 5000 vehicles passing each hour. If an invisible "silence foil" is additionally integrated during manufacturing, noise reduction classes 4 and 5 can then also be achieved, reducing sound by 45 dB to create quiet interiors even for a house located 300 m from an airport.

Ensuring Durable Weather Resistance

Given its exposed position protruding from the front of the roof, a dormer window also tends to be more exposed to the elements than a standard window installed in an average wall opening. Although vinyl frames provide superior insulation and can be particularly suitable for locations that face extreme temperatures or for damp attic roof renovations, for other properties an aluminum or externally clad frame may be a better option. For coastal areas, for example, the naturally impact resistance and robust metal could be ideal because it can withstand high pressures and strong winds very effectively. At Neuffer, aluminum window frames and composite aluminum vinyl oraluminum clad timber are then additionally anodized to make them anti-rust and particularly durable. Special coatings can then also be applied to improve anti-corrosion properties and reduce the weathering impact of salt in the air.

Customizing Design & Smooth Operation

No dormer window will be ready for its purpose without a safe, user-friendly opening and tailored style. At Neuffer we therefore offer a range of different systems and finishes to achieve this. Whether formed from one or multiple sashes, the product can be fully fixed, for example, but also have separately openable sections that can swing open or securely tilt inwards via a handle or motor. These systems have the window provide a steady, secure, and subtle supply of air to roof areas, which helps to prevent mould and creates a comfortable climate.

Alongside user-friendly openings, at Neuffer we can also supply different shading systems. One popular option are our roller shutters that can be operated with a crank, belt, or motor, which can optionally be connected to a smart home system. The shutters add extra weather protection and keep roof interiors cool. They can also be colored to match the house facade.

Beyond colored shutters, our window frames come with a wide range of quality surface finishes. From a charming oak frame fashioning a varnish to a vinyl one coated in a durable anthracite tone, all colors are professionally applied during manufacturing.
